(Cap Cana, Dominican Republic): Fred Couples hit a tee shot to 2-feet, 7 inches in a charity exhibition Wednesday as The Cap Cana Championship raised $22,000 to benefit the Fundacion AR - Infancia Sin Fronteras. Couples, a two-time winner on the Champions Tour this year, hit a 7-iron to the 168-yard hole from a buff near the 15th green, beating five of his peers in the event. “It’s the best shot I’ve hit all year,” said Couples, smiling. “It was pretty lucky. It hit right on the front (of the green) and trickled on. It was lucky.” Couples said he was happy to help the efforts following the Jan 12 earthquake which killed 150,000 people in Haiti. “I’m glad somebody was able to help the cause,” said Couples. “It didn’t matter which of us it was.” Tournament Director Efren Garcia-Estrada was gratified by the amount raised by the event. “We’re extremely happy that this last minute addition was such a success,” he said, “and we were able to add to our efforts to aid the people of Haiti. Having Fred win the closest to the pin is a good omen and a great way to start the week.” In February The Cap Championship auctioned off a golf vacation and raised $19,100 in that venture. A total of $41,000 was raised in these two events.
