Fred Couples fires new course record for historic victory

Fred Couples made Champions Tour history today at the Punta Espada golf club, winning The Cap Cana Championship with a record score of 195, 21-under par, for a two shot victory over Corey Pavin.  
Couples put on a display of golf worthy of a Renoir, painting broad brushstrokes of artistry over the 7,170-yard, par-72 course and winning in stunning fashion.
Couples broke the one-day-old course record with an 11-birdie, one-bogey 62 and became the first Champions Tour player to win three straight tournaments with sub-200 totals for 54 holes.

Corey Pavin sets course record, jumps into Lead

Cap Cana, Dominican Republic, March 27: Ryder Cup Captain Corey Pavin stormed into the lead at The Cap Cana Championship with a blistering course record 63, a 9-under par round that vaulted him to a single stroke lead over Nick Price.

Pavin’s nine birdie, no-bogey round and 36-hole total of 13-under-par 131 broke Bernhard Langer’s 2009 record of 64 at the Punta Espada Golf Club.

Cap Cana, Dominican Republic –March 26, 2010:  Nick Price and Chip Beck share the first round lead of The Cap Cana Championship with rounds of 6-under par 66. Champions Tour rookie Fred Couples, seeking his third victory in four starts, is one stroke back on 67, tied with former Masters champion Larry Mize, Olin Browne and David Peoples.

Couples wins Charity Exhibition

(Cap Cana, Dominican Republic): Fred Couples hit a tee shot to 2-feet, 7 inches in a charity exhibition Wednesday as The Cap Cana Championship raised $22,000 to benefit the Fundacion AR - Infancia Sin Fronteras. Couples, a two-time winner on the Champions Tour this year, hit a 7-iron to the 168-yard hole from a buff near the 15th green, beating five of his peers in the event.

Hole No. 1

KEITH FERGUS:  First hole, you've got a nice elevated  it's not a real difficult hole, but you're usually playing into the wind. You start with an elevated tee shot so it’s harder to keep the ball down with your drive if the wind's blowing.  It's a nice starting hole.  Par on the first hole is a good score. There is plenty of room off the tee.  The key is really how hard the wind is blowing when you start the round. A good drive will set up a birdie opportunity and you have a real chance to start the day off right.
